Data Storm empowers innovation at the intersection of data science and legislative action. We aim to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and leverage advanced technologies to generate data-driven insights that drive meaningful policy change. Through events, hackathons, and workshops, we aim to inspire creative problem-solving and develop tools that enhance decision-making and promote accountability in justice-related legislation. As a key initiative within Insight Legi, we strive to transform complex legislative data into actionable knowledge that supports fairness, equity, and civic engagement.

As a member of Data Storm: Ride the Legislative Change at George Mason University, individuals gain access to a unique, interdisciplinary community at the intersection of data science, policy, and civic innovation. Membership in this organization offers a range of benefits designed to support academic, professional, and leadership development. 1. Experiential Learning and Project Involvement * Members have the opportunity to contribute to live projects in collaboration with the Legal Systems and Policy Lab (LSPL) and Insight Legi. * Engage in the development and implementation of cutting-edge data tools designed to track, analyze, and visualize legislative data related to justice system fines, fees, and surcharges. * Participate in research and technical development that directly informs local and national policymaking. 2. Technical and Professional Skill Development * Access to specialized workshops, trainings, and hackathons focused on: * Data analytics and visualization * Legislative and policy analysis * Programming languages such as Python and R * Ethical data governance * Exposure to interdisciplinary problem-solving techniques through civic technology design and data storytelling. 3. Leadership and Governance Opportunities * Active Members are eligible to vote on organizational matters, including officer elections and constitutional amendments. * Opportunities to serve on committees, organize events, and lead initiatives within the organization. * Eligibility to run for Executive Board positions, allowing for the development of leadership, strategic planning, and administrative skills. 4. Professional Networking and Mentorship * Connection to a broad network of professionals, including: * Policy experts and legal scholars * Technologists and data scientists * Government partners and international civic organizations * Guidance and mentorship from faculty advisors, lab-affiliated researchers, and senior members of the organization. 5. Advocacy and Civic Engagement * Contribute to data-driven initiatives aimed at promoting legislative transparency, justice reform, and institutional accountability. * Participate in public-facing events and initiatives that inform and influence legislative decision-makers. * Utilize Insight Legi tools to deliver actionable insights to civic institutions, lawmakers, and the broader community. 6. Recognition and Advancement * Members may earn points for their engagement, qualifying for elevated status within the organization. * Receive formal acknowledgment of contributions to organizational projects, publications, and events. * Opportunities to present work in academic, professional, or community forums and add to resumes, portfolios, and graduate school applications.
