First-Gen+ Center - Sept. 13th Newsletter

Syed Mustafa Hassan - Saturday, September 14, 2024
 Events

Serving the first-generation community at Mason, including students who are first-gen *and* undocumented, have refugee status, and those who have families with limited income.

What We Do

The First-Gen+ Center serves as an accessible starting point for students (and their families) to understand and connect with relevant university resources. The team prioritizes data to better understand the student experience and proactively works toward improving the campus to be “first-gen ready” and “undocufriendly” throughout each university area. We work to enhance the collegiate experience through services, programs, policy awareness, and educating the campus community.

Staff on the team collaborate across campus and beyond, in order to streamline resources and supports for students, including participating at local and national levels to share practical and scholarly content as a catalyst for institutions to broaden their work.

CAMPUS & COMMUNITY RESOURCES

SIGN UP for Mason's Active Leaders Program TODAY!!!!!

What is the Active Leaders Program?

You do NOT need to have a leadership position to be a part of this program! The Active Leaders program is offered by Mason's Center for Leadership and Intercultural Engagement. It is a 10-week seminar (2 hours each week) taught by Dr. Nick Lennon. The program is designed to provide a more advanced leadership opportunity for Mason students (undergraduate as well as graduate). There is no reading and no homework. The primary focus is to provide a high-quality leadership program for active student leaders at Mason. The program will be in-person (on the Fairfax campus). We will have many interactive activities and discussions to help you learn about leadership (this is NOT a lecture-based program).

Deadline to register for the 2024 Active Leaders Program is 11:59pm on Sunday, September 15, 2024, but the earlier you apply the more likely you are to have a spot (we've had a waitlist the past few years). https://lead.gmu.edu/activeleaders/

Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities for Undocumented and Non-Citizen Students

Immigrant Rising offers a curated list of scholarships and fellowships that don’t require proof of U.S. citizenship. The list has general application eligibility requirements, including education level, region/state, and immigration status (e.g. DACA, TPS, in-state tuition eligibility) with the ability to use filters. Founded in 2006, Immigrants Rising transforms individuals and fuels broader changes. With resources and support, undocumented people are able to get an education, pursue careers, and build a brighter future for themselves and their community. Please refer to their webpage under “Click to Apply” for the comprehensive eligibility and application requirements – and to view all opportunities, since only those with due dates within the next 120 days are shown in the list.
