Lavender Orientation, started in Fall 2017 by student leaders and sponsored by Pride Alliance, arose from the need for new and transfer students to find LGBTQ+ life, students, and resources at George Mason. Lavender Orientation has, over time, passed to the LGBTQ+ Resources Center so we can highlight and include LGBTQ+ student leaders across campus as they search for new members and connections. In addition to this role as student affairs practitioners creating spaces for our Mason community to connect, Fall Lavender Orientation also kicks off our lifecycle programming for LGBTQ+ students (culminating in Lavender Cording Ceremony). While the focus has historically been on new or transfer students, it has also served to re-acquaint returning LGBTQ+ students with each other, our Center, and the resources the university offers. Fall Lavender Orientation 2025 will be held in-person on the Fairfax Campus. We will also provide a summary of resources shared on our IG after the conclusion of the event.

For accommodations that require support from Disability Services, please contact them directly at ods@gmu.edu. If you have accommodation-related questions about the general run of program, please email the Center directly at lgbtq@gmu.edu.

Please be aware that a 1-week notice is requested as some accommodations may require time for the University to arrange. Learn more about Event Accommodations here https://ds.gmu.edu/event-accessibility/

QT BIPOC Initiative\"QT

First piloted in Fall 2023, our QT BIPOC Initiative works to build community in GMU’s campus community for Queer and/or Trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Color folks.

In partnership with undergraduate center interns who are hired, trained, and compensated by the LGBTQ+ Resources Center, our continued focus in the 2025-2026 academic year is building community via regular meet-ups, visibility, and outreach to other student groups so GMU students, faculty, and staff who are QT BIPOC, and people who support them, can have space and find each other.

We are lucky to also work with Juton Myers in African and African American Studies Program, who serves as an advisor to the group, and is deeply invested in this work.

When our QT BIPOC Center Interns start in August, we will be able to share our schedule for regular meet-ups. If you have any questions or want to reach out sooner, you can email them at qtpoc@gmu.edu or connect on Instagram @qtbipoc_gmu

Center Internship Program

Like the LGBTQ+ Resources Center, our Center Internship Program cultivates the success, retention, and well-being of George Mason students. Our work is deeply collaborative and rooted in intersectional approaches. We build identity-affirming programs, develop leaders, provide critical resources, and foster a culture of meaningful community and allyship, at George Mason.

Center Intern Learning Outcomes

As a result of participating in this internship program, Center Interns will develop and practice the following skills:

  • Building an affirming support network
  • Stewarding a community space
  • Designing and delivering programs or projects
  • Using and sharing inclusive language and practices

Time Commitment

The undergraduate Center Intern position is designed for a 5 hour per week work commitment (Graduate and Doctoral-level positions will have higher engagement levels). This time includes regular meetings with their supervisor, regular meetings with their teams, and larger Center All Teams professional development opportunities. Outside of meetings, they will focus on their team projects and/or programs which may occur during the evening or weekend. All hours will be recorded for accountability.

  • Internship appointments last one academic year, but the scholarship will be awarded semesterly.
  • There is no expectation that interns work over breaks or during finals, besides being available the week prior to the semester for training.
  • Center Interns cannot also hold another role in the LGBTQ+ Resources Center (i.e. Center Coordinator)
Apply for a Center Internship on Handshake! (closes 11 August)

\"GeorgeTrans Clothing Closet Resource

The Trans Clothing Closet Resource (TCCR) was created in 2019 for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students to access free clothing and accessories. No one has to prove they are “trans enough” to use the closet.

The Trans Clothing Closet Resource is IN our LGBTQ+ Resources Center, in Student Union Building (SUB) I, Suite 2200. When the Center is open, so is the TCCR.

We are generally overstocked, so stop by and get a new fit.

Read more on the LGBTQ+ Resources Center TCCR Webpage, or you can follow us at our new Instagram account, specifically for the Trans Clothing Closet Resource for the most up to date information, @transclothingclosetresource!

Queer Buddy System

We're excited to continue to offer our Queer Buddy System Discord server, a resource available to students seeking community virtually! If you haven't already, be sure to open the verification channel and fill out the form required to gain access to all channels of the Queer Buddy System server.
