Dear Patriots,
Greetings once again from Mason Korea Student Government! As we come closer to the end of the Fall semester, so is the end of 2023 Student Government – more specifically, terms for our Executive Cabinet and Major Representatives! This also means that we’re working hard to prepare for this semester’s elections to vote for President & Vice-President and six Major Representatives within the Student Senate, including an Election Info Session and Candidacy Meeting for those who are interested in running for this semester’s elections. You may find the Election Schedule in full on our website.
As all things must come to an end, this monthly digest will be the last digest sent by the Jo-Choi Administration; look forward to our Fall 2023 Executive Report next month where we recap what Student Government has done this semester!
As always, you can find any of our previous monthly digests on our website at mk.sg.gmu.edu.
- Affiliated Discounts with Megabox Songdo: This month, we announced a new addition to our discount program available to our community for movie tickets and food discounts, with detailed information available on our website. As a reminder, please note that food discounts are only available for purchases made in bulk quantities, i.e., for events by student organizations or groups. There are no set minimum quantities for these purchases; please reach out to us at mksg@gmu.eduif you plan to make any purchases.
- League of Legends Championship: We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the Fall 2023 Mason Korea League of Legends Championship planned and organized by the University Life Department and Committee. We had nearly 30 students that participated in the event – competing as part of a team and getting to know other peers within Mason Korea, all the while having fun playing League of Legends. We congratulate the winners of this year’s inaugural competition and hope to expand and continue such an exciting event in semesters to come! A huge thank you to the staff members who gave their heart out in assisting Student Government to make the championship as exciting as possible as well.
- Collaboration with Fairfax Student Government: We are excited to announce the expansion of our collaboration with Fairfax Student Government, especially in the Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Department. As part of our yearly plans to hold liaison positions within the two campuses to inform each other of our progress and work on new projects, to be announced soon, to further student engagement on both of our campuses, we hope to be able to continue this exciting partnership for the success of our students.
- Collaborative Event Planning with PAC: If you’ve been around on-campus and seen the posters for the Winter Ball scheduled for December 1st, this event is one that Student Government and PAC are currently planning to create a delightful and elegant evening, aiming to conclude the semester on a high note. We thank those in the Patriot Activities Council for their work in collaboration with the University Life Department and Committee in Student Government, and look forward to seeing many of our students here!
- Collaborative Meeting with The Voice: This semester, Student Government began the foundation for a long-term and constructive partnership and collaboration with Mason Korea’s official student-run media outlet, The Voice. As student leaders representing and being the ‘voices’ of the student body, we had an insightful time catching up on what both of our organizations have done this year, talking about the recent concerns, suggestions, and feedback from our community.
- Anonymous Question Form: We now have an Anonymous Question Form on Mason360 where students can submit any questions or thoughts that they would like to share to Student Government. We post answers to submissions on our Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/mk_stugov/) as a story – you may see answers to previous questions as a Highlight under “Q&As”.
- Academic Affairs Town Hall, Focus Group Interview, and Meetings: Many of our members, including those in the Board of Major Representatives, attended many of the events organized by the Office of Academic Affairs such as the Town Hall on October 18 and the Focus Group Interview on November 6 and 18 to discuss the academic advising services, course offerings, and opportunities available to our students. We thank the Office for continuing to engage with the student body to hear our ideas, feedback, and suggestions and for their willingness to meet with Student Government, especially the University Academics Committee, to continue this beneficial conversation and engagement with our students.
As this marks the end of our Monthly Digests, we sincerely thank our students, faculty, and staff for their continued interest in Student Government and our meaningful progress that we’ve made over the academic year. Our very goals and objectives as student leaders are to not only serve and advocate for the interests of the student body but also to educate the University community regarding the state of the institution, as per the Student Body Constitution – something that will hopefully continue in the future as well.
Should you have any inquiries, please do feel free to reach out to us anytime.
