Dear Patriots,
Hello once again from Mason Korea Student Government! As we begin to approach midterm seasons, we hope you had a well-deserved break during the Chuseok holiday and are looking forward to Hangul Day next week Monday (October 9th). We have many exciting updates to share this month, and as always, you can find any of our previous Monthly Digests on our website at mk.sg.gmu.edu.
- Email and Office Changes: In line with our completed transition from Student Council to Student Government last semester, you may now reach out to us via our new email account at mksg@gmu.edu – please send all emails to our new account so that we may assist you in a timely manner. In addition, our Office, thanks to the help from the Office of University Life and Facilities Management, has moved to G405. Please note that we will be temporarily suspending Office Hours while we prepare and set up our new Office.
- Fall 2023 Graduation: As you may know, Mason Korea will now be holding its graduation ceremonies in the Spring semester. We are aware of the concerns brought up within our community and are committed to working with our leadership and other community members to recognize our upcoming graduates this semester.
- IGC Music Room Reservations: In addition to classroom reservations required by students, the IGC Music Room is now available for students and student organizations to reserve. The links to both Mason360 forms can be found here on our website, or via Student Resources > Facilities.
- Meeting with Dean Matz: Our Executive Leadership team, on September 18, held a meeting with Campus Dean Robert Matz to discuss the upcoming Mason Korea leadership transition. In addition to these matters, we touched on important details such as our recent construction – which we anticipate a public budget report of sorts to be published – and upcoming 10th anniversary. We thank our leadership once again for their commitment to the needs and concerns of our community.
- Meeting with Fairfax Student Government and Liaison Updates: On September 28, Mason Korea Student Government attended a meeting with our counterparts in the Fairfax Campus to further our cross-campus collaboration and partnership. Joined by our Executive Leadership and Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Departments and Committees from both Student Governments, Mason Student Government in the Fairfax Campus has taken steps to add liaison responsibilities for our Mason Korea students, with plans to do the same for our international student body in Mason Korea Student Government as well. We look forward to where this exciting collaboration takes us in the future!
- Faculty-Student Engagement Program (FSEP) Update: Together with the help of our faculty and staff, we are excited to share that an initiative that Mason Korea Student Government presented during this semester’s Faculty Professional Development Day – a Faculty-Student Engagement Program (FSEP) for faculty and students to network outside the classroom environment – is tentatively planned for a ‘pilot program’ starting next semester. We will keep our community updated as details for this exciting program are set in stone.
- CDS Major Representative Vacancies: We regret to announce that, having completed our second and final round of applications, our CDS Major Representative position within the Student Senate will remain vacant for the Fall 2023 semester. Mason Korea Student Government, will, however, work to ensure adequate representation for our Computational and Data Sciences students within the Student Senate.
- Elections and Disputes Commission (EDC) Recruitment: With the end of the Fall 2023 semester getting closer, so is election season! As a reminder, positions up for election during Fall elections are Student Body President, Vice-President, and 6 (six) seats for Senate as Major Representatives. We anticipate the recruitment of Commissioners for the new and independent Elections and Disputes Commission (EDC) to take place very soon to prepare for elections, tentatively planned for November.
As always, should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us via email at mksg@gmu.edu.
Best of luck on your midterms!
Best regards,
Hyunwoo Jo (he/him)
