Happy October! ðŸŽƒ

Hello, All!
We hope your semester has been going well so far!
October is officially here and we're ready for all the Fall vibes! If you also love Fall or Halloween, stop by the center and check out our new "Weekly Affirmation" board that will be updated both weekly and seasonally!

LGBTQ+ History Month

October is LGBTQ+ History Month!

LGBTQ+ History Month is a month-long observance of queer history and the history of gay and transgender rights. It was originally founded by Rodney Wilson, a gay history teacher from Missouri in 1994, to bring awareness to the rich history of queer people. The institution of the event was meant to highlight their strength and bravery by commemorating the first and second marches on Washington, fighting for the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
Now, we continue using the month of October as a time to remember those who fought for our rights, and the trailblazers and changemakers who continue to fight for us!

If you're interested in learning more about queer history, think about attending this Lecture and Book Talk that discusses the experiences of queer women in Nazi Germany.

All Together Queer (ATQ)

ATQ is a biweekly, student-centered learning community co-facilitated by the LGBTQ+ Resources Center, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and Housing & Residence Life's Ridge team that focuses on empowering all students, including queer, trans, non-binary, and questioning students in the face of personal and political stress. Come learn to embrace your identities, build community, and face the world’s challenges in a space of acceptance and celebration of what LGBTQ+ communities bring to the world.

ATQ's regular meet-ups this month will be held on October 9th and October 30th. The meet-up on October 9th will be held in collaboration with QTBIPOC! Both events are from 5:00pm-7:00pm.

You can register for the first meeting below!

QT BIPOC InitiativeQT BIPOC logo

First piloted in Fall 2023, our QT BIPOC Initiative works to build community in GMU’s campus community for Queer and/or Trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Color folks, as well as those who support them.

This semester, two center interns and one of our graduate professional assistants have dedicated their time and efforts to leading this initiative and creating a strong groundwork of community at our university through regular meetups. The purpose and goal of these meetings is to allow students, faculty, and staff who are QT BIPOC to have space and find support.

We are lucky to also work with Juton Myers in African and African American Studies Program, who serves as an advisor to the group, and is deeply invested in this work.

For the month of October, QT BIPOC's regular meet-up will be held on October 9th from 5:00pm-6:30pm and in collaboration with All Together Queer (ATQ.)

You can register for the upcoming meet-up below!

George Mason Trans Clothing Closet Resource logoTrans Clothing Closet Resource

Created in 2019, the Trans Clothing Closet is a resource where transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students can find free clothing and accessories. No one has to prove they are “trans enough” to use the closet.

The Trans Clothing Closet Resource is IN our LGBTQ+ Resources Center, in Student Union Building (SUB) I, Suite 2200.

We are generally overstocked, so stop by and get a new fit!

*Though we're not accepting donations right now, binder donations are ALWAYS accepted!*

You can read more on our website or reach out to us via email with questions at our new TCCR at GMU email address: tqmason@gmu.edu.

Queer Buddy System

We're excited to continue to offer our Queer Buddy System Discord server, a resource available to students seeking community virtually! If you haven't already, be sure to open the verification channel and fill out the form required to gain access to all channels of the Queer Buddy System server.

The LGBTQ+ Resources Center cultivates the success, retention, and well-being of George Mason students. Our work is deeply collaborative and rooted in intersectional approaches. We build identity-affirming programs, develop leaders, provide critical resources, and foster a culture of meaningful community and allyship, at Mason.
