African and African American Studies program (AAAS) is not simply an academic program. There are the pedagogical and administrative components, which make AAAS unique. Pedagogically, we are committed to the pursuit of knowledge, research, and reform. Founded in 1991 by former associate provost of education, Dr. Marilyn Mobley, this minor degree program is interdisciplinary for the benefit of George Mason University students. Comprehensively, this program allows students to experience the many people of African descent from subjects, such disciplines as history, literature, political science, women and gender studies, sociology, psychology, philosophy, music, dance, and art. Courses and faculty are drawn from the program as well as from other units of the university.

Welcome to the BSW Program! The mission of the BSW program is to prepare entry-level
generalist social work professionals who will demonstrate ethical leadership in innovative
multidisciplinary practice, social reform, and research in diverse communities. Students are
provided a range of opportunities to develop a broad knowledge and skills base consistent with
the systems and strengths perspectives. Students are expected to practice using core social
work values and to examine and resolve ethical dilemmas. Classroom and field experiences
prepare students to be competent in the use of new technologies and in culturally sensitive,
generalist social work practice. Over the years, our students have become successful social
workers, administrators, advocates, lawyers, clergy, and educators. All have left our program
prepared to face the world of work and/or further academic success. This BSW Student
Handbook serves as a resource to help make the undergraduate social work education a
successful journey. It is your responsibility to read through this handbook carefully and be
familiar with and abide by all program policies.

The mission of the Bioengineering Department at Mason is to create new knowledge and technology at the interface between engineering and bioscience to improve human health through research and education. To accomplish this mission, the primary goals of the department are:

To provide a challenging and rewarding multidisciplinary education to our students;
To establish and conduct nationally-recognized research programs in bioengineering;
To serve the University as a nexus for opportunities at the interface of engineering and biomedicine; and

The Department offers a comprehensive study of religion that spans geographies, traditions, and methods, including historical, ethnographic, philological, sociological, and text critical approaches. Religious Studies as an inherently inter-disciplinary field brings together the scientific and historical study of religion, which may include an intense focus on a specific religion, the comparative study of multiple religions, or even the very definition of "religion."

The Early Childhood Education department is housed under the Division of Child, Family, and Community Engagement in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).
We offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as Bachelor/Accelerated Master's(BAM) pathways.

The Early Childhood Education Program at Mason prepares early childhood educators to work in early childhood education settings, including early childhood special education and prekindergarten to third grade settings, with children and families who bring diverse cultural, racial, linguistic, ability, and socio-economic backgrounds to early childhood education settings.

Many of our students come to us interested in teaching and choose options that lead to Virginia licensure in Early/Primary Education PreK-3 and Early Childhood Special Education, Birth-Age 5. Upon graduation students pursue careers in the following areas:
- Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade Teachers

Students interested in the study of global affairs at Mason have the opportunity to participate in two of the few truly interdisciplinary global studies degrees in the United States. The Global Affairs Program at Mason draws upon faculty and courses across the university to provide students with comprehensive yet specialized degrees. Global Affairs students examine transnational and international processes in a wide range of areas. Students also study specific regions, languages, and investigate the ways particular parts of the world experience global phenomena.

The Department of Psychology strives to develop and apply scientific psychology in ways that enhance human potential.

We support research-based practice because we want to bring our research findings into the everyday practice of psychology. We support practice-informed research because we want to solve real-world problems, not those of interest only to other academics.

This dual focus has inspired our faculty to conduct research on topics ranging from what makes people happy to what keeps planes from crashing into one another. Members of our faculty have served on task forces, national committees (e.g., National Academy of Sciences, the Federal Aviation Administration), and advisory boards (e.g., the Air Force, the Guggenheim Foundation).

The importance and quality of the work we do have been recognized by government agencies, industries and foundations that have provided more than $24.5 million in support for our research work. We count among our current and emeritus faculty eight presidents of Divisions of the American Psychological Association, and a president of the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society.

We are committed to training students at all levels, from high school students who intern with us through post-doctoral students seeking to gain additional skills after receiving their doctoral degree. The department serves more undergraduate majors than any other department in the university, and has a wide variety of minors available to students studying in other areas. We host a strong cadre of roughly 250 graduate students, all of whom are doing research as part of their degree.

We are also at the forefront of evolving technologies in education, with an undergraduate degree that can be completed entirely online. We have also added a Master of Professional studies Degree that can be completed online and is targeted towards working adults.

Students at all levels have the opportunity to work side by side with our faculty in their labs; some of these students go on to do their own independent research through our undergraduate honors program.
