Details

Attendees will hear Shaykh Abdullah Wardere give a two-hour talk on the lives of the Sahaba, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, focusing on the hardships they faced and how they responded to them. The session covers both the historical events themselves and their interpretation and significance, so students leave understanding not just what happened but why these stories are still taught today. Attendees will learn about specific companions and the struggles that defined them — persecution, exile, loss, and the pressure to hold onto their beliefs in hostile conditions — and will be able to draw parallels to challenges students face today, such as isolation, adversity, and staying committed to their values. There will be time for questions so students can engage directly with the speaker rather than only listening. The talk is followed by a dessert reception, which gives attendees from different backgrounds a low-pressure setting to meet each other and continue the discussion. The event is free and open to all Mason students, including those with no prior background in Islamic history.
Food Provided (Multiple flavors of Ice Cream catered from Ben & Jerry's)
