Details

This trail is rated as strenuous on AllTrails. Old Rag Mountain Loop is one of the most iconic and challenging hikes in Shenandoah National Park, famous for its demanding climb, thrilling rock scrambles, and stunning 360-degree summit views. The classic clockwise loop begins with a steep ascent along rocky switchbacks before transitioning into a mile-long Class 3 rock scramble, where hikers navigate massive granite boulders, narrow crevices, and exposed rock faces that require careful footing and some upper-body strength. The summit offers expansive views and is a well-earned reward after multiple false summits along the way. The descent follows a longer but more gradual fire road through forested terrain.

Permits are required to hike Old Rag from March through November and must be reserved in advance. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. Due to the length, elevation gain, and technical sections, this hike is best suited for experienced hikers who are comfortable with scrambling and sustained climbs. Bringing plenty of water, proper footwear, and downloading the map ahead of time is highly recommended.

Length: 9.3 miles
Elevation gain: 2,608 ft
Estimated duration: 5 – 6 hours + driving time
