Mission
The mission of the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies is to advance a sound and nuanced understanding of Muslim societies and the Islamic faith, its role in world history, and its current patterns of globalization. The center recognizes that Islam is a universal faith and a world civilization with a global community. Thus, the center provides a global, rather than regional, framework for exploring Islam.

The AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies supports research, interdisciplinary academic programs, and community outreach. By providing educational and research opportunities for students, faculty, and visiting scholars, it is helping develop 21st century leaders with a sophisticated understanding of the complex dynamics that shape Muslim communities worldwide.

There are three core elements in our Center's mission:

- develop experiential learning opportunities to complement and expand traditional academic offerings;
- engage students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members building and growing new ventures and organizations;
- drive the growth of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem

We work with a diverse set of collaborators on campus and off in our mission to help our students, alumni and community members realize their visions of the future.

In addition to the three core elements of our mission, the Center has identified two high growth, innovation led areas of the economy to focus on: the business of well-being and the food and beverage industry.

Both areas of the market are undergoing rapid change and full of opportunity. Student and alumni interest, regional importance and growth, and accessibility and the possibility for measurable impact are among the reasons these important social and economic sectors were chosen for programming, research and regional engagement.

The Center for the Arts is part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), whose mission is to make the arts an intrinsic part of the lives of every George Mason University student and area resident. The Great Performances at Mason season is integral to the College's mission, providing a diverse program of challenging and entertaining cultural experiences for the entire University community, as well as Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. area.

The Institute brings, under one roof, researchers from a number of disciplines focusing on technologies, diagnostics and therapies targeting some of the most complex and pervasive diseases of our time. Researchers from Mason's science, engineering, health, and education colleges collaborate at the institute. Current research includes personalized medicine, proteomics, cancer treatments, Lyme disease, nanotechnology-based diagnostics and infectious diseases. The Institute is guided by the translational mission to bring solutions to market, thus maximizing their impact in human health and creating economic opportunity for Virginia.
