Did you know that you can register to vote on campus if you live in the dorms? Whether you are from out-of-state or from 5-minutes off campus you register to vote on-campus and vote at the Merten Hall polling location on Election Day.
Visit iwillvote.com to see if you need to update your registration or register to vote. In order to vote in any Virginia Election, you must register in advance of Election Day!
Great News! You can update your registration or register to vote right online. Visit the VA Department of Elections website to get started.
No Worries! You can still register to vote by printing out and submitting a paper form. Find the form and instructions here, or contact us and we will bring you a form.
If you would like to register to vote on campus you must use the physical address of your dorm building for your residence address. This is a change from previous years where you needed to register using your HUB Mailing Address + Room Number + Dorm Building Name. If you are not sure what the address of your dorm list is please check the table below this section.
To submit a paper form you must mail the form into the Fairfax County Registrar's office at PO Box 10161 Fairfax, VA 22038. Please not that GMU's Fairfax campus is located in the county not the city. If you do not feel comfortable with mailing in your form, Dems at Mason does Voter Registration in the early fall where we can guide you through the paper form and then submit the form for you in person to Fairfax County.
Don't Wait!! In most cases, in order to be registered you must submit the form no later than 21 days before the next election. In order to ensure that you are registered, we recommend that you register much earlier than the deadline, and frequently check your status on the VA Department of Elections Website to make sure that any potential problems are noticed before too late. In addition, we recommend that you include your phone number on the form so that the registrar can contact you with any potential issues.
Polling Places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. If you are registered to vote on campus you will vote at Merten Hall on Election Day. Enter the main entrance by Panda Express and then signs and volunteers will guide you through the process. Please note that only voters registered with an on campus address can vote at Merten Hall. If you can not vote on Election Day, you must vote by mail or by using one of Fairfax County's early voting sites. Find early voting sites here and info on mail in voting here.
What do I need to Bring When I Vote?

Same day voter registration allows you to show up to your polling place during early voting or on election day and register to vote & cast a ballot, even after the voter registration deadline.
IN 2021, VIRGINIA DEMOCRATS IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY EXPANDED VOTING ACCESS BY ALLOWING SAME DAY registration, AND THE NEW SYSTEM GOES INTO EFFECT FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR. Previously, registration was closed for the 21 days before an election; there was no ability to register to vote after this deadline. The new law allows registration, with limitations, during the 21-day period before an election.
STEPS:
1) IF YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED TO VOTE OR REGISTERED AT AN OLD ADDRESS, SHOW UP TO THE POLLING PLACE OR EARLY VOTE LOCATION FOR YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS.
2) REGISTER TO VOTE AT YOUR POLLING PLACE. YOU WILL NEED TO FILL OUT A VOTER Registration FORM. BEFORE YOU SHOW UP TO YOUR POLLING PLACE, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE INFO REQUIRED FOR THE FORM. THIS INCLUDES YOUR ADDRESS, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, AND MORE. SEE THE VOTER Registration FORM AND instructions ON HOW TO FILL IT OUT ABOVE.
3) VOTE! AFTER YOU SAME DAY REGISTER, YOU WILL CAST A PROVISIONAL BALLOT. Provisional ballots are not processed by a vote counting machine at the time of voting, but rather are subject to approval by the local electoral board prior to the ballot being counted. If your registration application is approved and there are no other issues, your ballot will be counted. If your ballot is not counted, you will receive written notice from your general registrar.
