Objectives
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is a non-profit organization founded in 1971. The purpose of the Association for Women in Mathematics is to encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.
The GMU student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics was founded in 2012 and has undergraduate, graduate student and faculty members. The club is open to members of both genders. We organize and participate in activities to promote studies and careers in mathematics, and disseminate information about various career development opportunities. We hold meeting and invite speakers with careers in mathematics or STEM fields to share their experiences and advice. We also participate in several outreach activities such as Sonia Kovalesky Day and collaborate with local high school mathematics organizations.
Philosophy of Action
In order to help our members contribute to our chapter and develop their leadership potentials, we have implemented a philosophy of action. If you as a member have a wonderful idea about an event that will enrich, educate, or develop skills of our members, we ask that you be willing to take charge of your idea and lead it. While the executive board will give you insight about the logistics and will help your idea become a plan and then a reality, we encourage our members to coordinate the events. In the process, our members further develop and demonstrate skills such as collaboration, organization, and leadership.
