This 3-credit summer program hosted in Quito and the unique Galápagos islands will explore sustainable development through a social science lens. In partnership with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), students will spend the first week at USFQ’s scenic Cumbayá campus, engaging in morning seminars with local scholars whose work spans political science, sociology, environmental policy, and development studies. Afternoon site visits will allow students to examine how questions of sustainability intersect with governance, inequality, indigenous rights, and urban development in one of Latin America's most ecologically and culturally diverse countries.
In the second week, students will travel to the Galápagos Islands for a few days, where academic sessions continue at USFQ’s campus in San Cristóbal, complemented by field-based learning at conservation sites, local communities, and research institutions. Through these experiences, students will critically explore the social dimensions of sustainability, including the tensions between environmental protection, tourism, and local livelihoods.
