Details

The Communication Academy is an interactive workshop series designed to help graduate students learn techniques to communicate their research and expertise in compelling ways that inspire a wide variety of audiences. Graduate students will develop written and spoken communication skills for both academia and industry, from networking tips to conference applications. The Communication Academy also helps to build community among graduate students from across different colleges, giving them a space to discuss their research and career interests.

Communication Academy: How to Apply for Conferences: From Abstract to Presentation

This workshop introduces graduate students to conference applications. It will show students to how to convey the impact of their research in an abstract, how to avoid jargon, how to review a Call for Proposals, and how to plan their conference presentations. This workshop is open to graduate students of all disciplines and is highly recommended for participants in the Three Minute Thesis Competition and Research Poster Competition.

In this workshop, graduate students will learn how to approach identifying fellowship and grant opportunities available to George Mason graduate students and the general expectations of popular fellowships. We will discuss strategies for developing a personalized plan to locate relevant fellowships and grants, as well as writing strategies for the common fellowship components such as personal statements and research plans. In addition, supplementary drop-in office hours will be offered one week later to provide deeper fellowship application support.
